Recovery from total tooth loss – full mouth rehabilitation

Tooth loss can be a very difficult experience to endure, usually due to a systemic condition like gum disease. But you do not have to tolerate receding jawbones or restoratives that cause discomfort. Our full mouth rehabilitation Marylebone, with our dentist David Madruga, uses implants to secure a set of premium dentures in place, seamlessly returning form and function back to your mouth.

Limitations of dentures

Dentures are extremely timely and certainly have their uses, but the friction sores and eventual loss of underlying bone is one of the biggest drawbacks that can occur with them. In order to hold themselves firmly in place, they require a tight fit to the gum. This can initially be very good but the load generated by eating and chewing is spread out over the surface of the gum and is not delivered to the jawbone via roots as it would have been before tooth loss. With such little load placed on the bone itself, reabsorption occurs and as the bone recedes and the gum narrows, so the dentures become loose and rub easily, causing chronic ulcers and sores. This can be mitigated with adhesives and by continuing to re-adjust the denture to the changing jawbone, but it is an on-going bugbear of denture users.

Limitations of single implants

A single implant used as an artificial root for a crown-like prosthesis is an excellent way of replacing a single missing tooth from an otherwise healthy smile. But it has its limitations, the first being that the position of the location of the implant is dictated by the location of the missing tooth. It can be slightly mitigated with focusable and extendable connectors, allowing our dentist to find the areas of higher bone density, but it is still highly restrictive.

The implant fitting is carried out over two procedures with a 4 to12 month period in between to allow osseointegration; this is where the titanium portion of the implant becomes fully fixed into the jawbone with new bone tissue growing around it.

The techniques do not scale well and attempting to replace an entire set of teeth each on their own  implant would be prohibitively expensive for the vast majority of our full mouth rehabilitation Marylebone patients.

Implant immobilised dentures

In many ways, we have found that an implant-supported immobilised denture combines some of the best features of both treatments, while mitigating several of the drawbacks. It combines the stability and reliability of a full implant, but with a significantly reduced cost and proven track record of dentures. Where the implants are placed along the dental arch is flexible, allowing the best location to be selected after the areas of high bone density are assessed by X-ray. This increases the chances of the implant being accepted into the jawbone.

The implants will support the denture once they are fully integrated, but during this process when your bone is being laid down, they are vulnerable to being disturbed because multiple implants are attached to the same denture. However the risks of them twisting are slim to none, allowing same-day procedures, making it one of the best options for full mouth rehabilitation Marylebone at our practice.

Your situation is as unique as you are and we are determined to provide you with an individualised treatment plan that honours exactly this. Having a perfect smile is different for everyone, although we understand that there are several key factors that determine a healthy and beautiful smile for most.

These features involve having straight, even and white teeth, with many people associating these elements of a smile to attractiveness, honesty and intelligence. Although we are aware of the detrimental impact of judging one another and many of us actively try to avoid this behaviour, there is still an element of unconscious bias that is difficult to remove in society and in particular, when we judge ourselves as well.

If you want to stop thinking about how your smile looks and simply feel confident with sharing it with the world, then our team can offer you many solutions with our full mouth rehabilitation Marylebone.

What are some of the treatments available?

Some of the treatments that will be suggested to you during your consultation for your full mouth rehabilitation Marylebone will all depend on your personal situation. Within the broad treatments that can change your smile dramatically, which involve teeth straightening, teeth whitening and veneers, we also have many different ways in which we can provide these results.

For example, teeth straightening can be completed with the use of fixed or removable aligners and this will depend on both your physical situation as well as your personal preferences and lifestyle choices are as well.

If you have mild to moderately misaligned teeth then you will have more options than someone with a more severe case. Our dentists will be able to talk you through the advantages and any potential risks that are associated with each treatment, giving you the opportunity to make the most informed decision to suit you the best.

In terms of veneers, many of our patients choose this option knowing that they are working to improve the overall visual condition of their teeth, rather than needing to focus on one issue at a time. Should you have a few badly stained teeth that whitening solutions struggle to remove as well as a chip in a tooth and even a slight misalignment, you can opt for the one treatment to completely redefine your smile, all in a matter of a few appointments.

We will discuss the disadvantages of this treatment option with you as well as such obvious benefits so that you are aware of these before making this lifelong commitment. Perhaps the biggest consideration for our patients is that although veneers last several years, you do need to be aware that you will need to replace them when they do chip away over time, which can become difficult as they do remain one of the more costly options on offer.

Restore your smile with full mouth rehabilitation in Marylebone

Building your smile

full-mouth-rehabilitation

At David Madruga, one of the most comprehensive and complex dental procedures which we carry out is full mouth rehabilitation in Marylebone. Whilst this may be – on some level – one of the most complex procedures we offer, it is also by far one of the most rewarding, as it allows us to completely build up and restore a patient’s smile in a way which is entirely unique to them. We strive to restore both their ability to chew, smile and eat freely, as well as renew their self-esteem and confidence through this method of treatment.

Consultation and consideration

Typically, those who are considering full mouth rehabilitation in Marylebone must initially carry out a consultation period with one of our specialists here at David Madruga. As full mouth rehabilitation treatment is generally opted for by those who are missing an entire set of teeth, there are particular precautions which must be taken prior to beginning the restorative treatments. One of the most important of these being the strength and health of the patient’s gums. Any signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease must first be addressed, as well as the health of the patient’s jawbone, as it must be healthy enough to support any implants. During this consultation period, a number of X-rays and photographs may be taken to give our specialists a better understanding of the patient’s overall oral health. Additionally, during this consultation the dentist may cover the benefits that a full mouth rehabilitation in Marylebone will have on the patient’s dental well-being and self-esteem.

Filling in the gaps

Thereafter, after preliminary steps and assessments have been made – providing the patient is in good enough oral health to proceed with the implant process, the restoration will begin. Given the nature of full mouth rehabilitation, each case is different and has to be tailored to fit the specifics of each patient. In an instance where the patient has no natural teeth, the initial process would involve administering the patient with a local anaesthetic to ensure they are not in any discomfort before installing the first set of implants. Dental implants which would be installed during a full mouth rehabilitation work by fusing themselves within the bone tissue of the patient’s jaw, as they are constructed as a titanium-alloy socket. Once this socket has been inserted into the patient’s jaw and has been given time to fuse, a replica tooth (or teeth) are then fixed in place. Typically, a full mouth restoration of a patient who has no natural teeth would involve multiple trips to the dentist over a lengthy period of time. However, although full mouth restorations may be a lengthy process, they are generally greatly favoured over removable restorations such as conventional dentures. This is because dental implants look and feel like natural teeth as they are fused within the patient’s jawbone in a way which is similar to how a natural tooth is. Additionally, although they may take longer to instal, implants are proven to be far more durable and longer lasting than dentures and as such can fully transform a patient’s smile on a more permanent basis and leave them with a vastly renewed sense of self-confidence, with a smile to match.

Why make it any harder?

We all need to eat. We all need to smile, to talk, laugh and yawn. When you have all your teeth in place and in good working order, you probably never even consider how hard life might be if being able to do any or all of these things became hard, or even impossible.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation in MaryleboneBut start to lose your teeth and you soon find out. Lose most or all of them and, even if you have dentures, these simple and important tasks can become unbearable. You may find yourself turning down dinner invitations because you don’t want to try crunchy or chewy foods. You may find yourself smiling with lips tightly shut, if at all, and as for bursting out laughing, forget it. There is so much fundamental pleasure tied up with eating and yawning, laughing and chatting, that when you’re more worried about making a twit of yourself because of your teeth, pleasure and confidence drain away.

If this is how your life has been for a while, maybe now is the time to invest in improving your quality of life with a full mouth rehabilitation here with David Madruga in Marylebone.

With a full mouth rehabilitation, we replace all of your teeth with dental implants. This may mean having to remove your remaining teeth, which are already on the way out.

This gives us a blank canvas on which to rebuild your smile so that it looks great and works well too.

The great thing about dental implants is that one implant can support several teeth on a bridge, so you won’t need to have 32 of them. We do a great treatment called All-on-4 that allows us to replace an entire arch of teeth on just 4-6 dental implants.

We will fit you with temporary dentures while your implants are given time (somewhere from 2-6 months, depending on your individual rate of healing) to fuse with your jawbone. Then we fit you with custom-made crowns that are designed to look like your own teeth. These are permanently fixed in place, so there’s no need to worry about wobbling. You just treat them as carefully as your own natural teeth and they can last for decades.

We can help you get your mouth back

It can be so very disheartening to watch your teeth fail one by one over the years. It does seem that if one goes, the others soon follow. They need each other to remain in place in the jawbone and when there is a gap left by a missing tooth, the other teeth can start to wander, tip into the gap and even fall out. Or maybe, you were not born with healthy teeth and it has always been a big struggle to keep them in good condition.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation in MaryleboneWhatever the reason, if you have lost or are about to lose all your teeth, do not sink into despair. At David Madruga in Marylebone, full mouth rehabilitation can give you back your smile and your ability to chew, laugh and speak with complete freedom, by using dental implant restorations.

How it works

As the name implies, full mouth rehabilitation is a big job. We need to plan it carefully, and to do so we will need to do CT scans, and take x-rays. This is so that we know exactly where to place the dental implants without damaging nerves or blood vessels.

If you have been without teeth for a while, you may need to have extra procedures, such as bone grafts or sinus lifts, so that your jawbone will be strong enough to take the implants, integrate with them and withstand the incredible forces created by chewing.

We will extract any remaining, failing teeth and fit between four and six dental implants per arch. You will then wait a few weeks while the dental implants integrate with your jawbone, and during this time you will wear temporary restorations.

Then we will fit you with handmade porcelain crowns that will have been created to suit your mouth perfectly. All you need to do to look after your implants is to brush them carefully twice a day, floss your teeth and then come in for a check-up and to see the hygienist twice a year.

Why not come in for a consultation to find out how David Madruga can help you get your smile back.
